“I think I've finally figured this market out. Everything's starting to click.”
Have you caught yourself thinking this?
Why does a period of success make uncertainty feel smaller than it actually is?
What's happening psychologically?
A series of successful trades can create a powerful sense of progress. Confidence rises and market behaviour feels clearer. Some confidence may come from genuine improvement; recent success can also lead traders to underestimate how much uncertainty remains.
The mind shifts from “my process has performed well” to “I understand what the market will do”. Caution may then seem unnecessary.
A winning streak can reflect good execution, favourable conditions, chance or a combination. The result alone cannot tell you which.
Often preceded by
Consecutive wins, strong execution, repeated successful predictions, rising equity.
May involve
Overconfidence, recency bias, self-attribution, illusion of control.
Can lead towards
Unjustified position-size increases, relaxed entry criteria, excessive trading.
Catch it
Notice when recent success changes the risk limits and rules you followed before the winning streak.
Interruption question
“What evidence shows that my recent success reflects a lasting improvement rather than a favourable period?”
When this thought might be reasonable
Confidence can grow appropriately when supported by sufficient data and consistent execution.
